Alan Rutter

Alan is the founder of Fire Plus Algebra, and a specialist in data visualisation and communications in the technology industry.

He is a journalist, digital consultant, product owner and trainer, developing and delivering training courses on a range of subjects. Alan trained thousands of people from hundreds of different organisations – including startups, major corporations, public sector bodies, charities and NGOs.

He runs workshops and delivers in-house training for clients including Riskified, the Financial Conduct Authority, the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the Arts Council, and numerous other organisations. For four years running he was a speaker at the Open Data Science Conference.

He previously worked with Guardian Masterclasses on curating and delivering new course strands, including developing and teaching their B2B data visualization courses. He oversaw the iPad edition launches of Wired, GQ, Vanity Fair and Vogue in the UK, and has worked with Condé Nast International as product owner on a bespoke digital asset management system for their 11 global markets.

Alan co-founded the consultancy Clever Boxer, working with clients including Frieze, The Idler, VEON and the Royal National Lifeboat Institute.

Alan writes for Phable and Digital Daze. Previously he was Online Editor at Time Out, having also worked as Acting Deputy Editor and Features Editor on the magazine.

All courses are highly interactive – delivering a mix of formal tuition and hands-on, practical exercises.
